In 2010 MELBOURNE DECK BUILDERS, Timber Decking Now, visited a delightful retired couple living in Forrest Hill, MELBOURNE.
The couple had a courtyard area between their garage and home which was a real eyesore and almost unusable during the Melbourne Winter. They had engaged a reputable company to construct a steel powder coated & gabled roof over the open span. The construction was the perfect solution in keeping the rain out, but truly emphasised the patchy, uneven and ugly surface beneath. This led the retired couple to contact Timber Decking Now (through a personal recommendation from the roof builder) to quote on a timber deck and thereby creating a true alfresco dining and entertainment area. Visiting this couple was an absolute delight. Bill and Doris were "old school" steeped in the traditional Australian values of hospitality, friendliness and a fair go for all! After spending two hours chatting about life in general over a cup of tea and biscuits, we eventually got down to the business of measuring and quoting the project. Upon completing the measure and noting the couples requests, we again sat down over coffee and home made cakes whilst we finalised the figures. We completed our figures, presented an "on the spot" quote and were explaining the details, when Bill suddenly looked to Doris and said "what time is it dear, I don't want to be late". Thinking we were holding them up, we began to pack our samples and paperwork up, when Bill stated, "Iv'e got to get to the bank, can you wait for me, I will only be twenty minutes?" "Why is that" we asked. "To get the deposit for the deck!" "Have we won your project Bill?" Bill looked at us and stated "Tea and biscuits for quoting...... coffee and cake for winners!" The photos below show "before & after" shots taken during construction! The deck is 140mm select grade Merbau with an all H3/H4 subfloor. This weatherboard unit in Box Hill South was almost brand new. Out the back was a very small deck of the type that builders instal to get a Certificate of Occupancy.
What the new owner wanted was an outdoor deck at floor level, SS wire inserts in the hand rails, and access via a Merbau faced set of steps to the clothes line. The deck was constructed on two levels to accommodate the owners desire to have a separate raised area for a small outdoor setting. The garden was fully established due to the unit being built as a"dual occupancy" on backyard site. The deck addition added real value to already desirable unit by way of creating a practical and appealing outdoor living zone. Melbourne Deck Builders, TIMBER DECKING NOW, we're very satisfied with the results of this project. The client was FAR MORE satisfied and made sure we knew it with a celebrative beer and a long chat on completion. This new home in the basin was surrounded by mud, causing the young couple plenty of problems trying to keep their new home clean and tidy. To make matters worse, they could not access their clothes line or use the rear roller door to the garage during the wet months. Melbourne Deck Builders, Timber Decking Now, built this large and imposing deck to suit the young couples outdoor lifestyle. The deck was constructed during the muddy Winter of 2003.
Timber Decking Now was 'rained off' on three occasions during the construction period, making this project a drawn out battle with the elements. However, the end result justified the effort, with the new owners extremely happy with the multilevel finish. |
