It was hard to describe this project in CHIRNSIDE PARK at the time! Was it a "repair" Was it an "addition" or was it a "delayed completion?"
Regardless of how it was described at the time, there was work to be done! The upper level deck was completed and occupied! It was supported by timber posts encased in brickwork on the lower third. The bottom level deck did not exist at all.....Yet some one had begun the basic frame work....but quickly realised they were out of their depth and therefore abandoned any further efforts. It was time to bring in the professionals to fix this embarrassing problem. We have seen this embarrassment many times. Well meaning home owners attempting what seems on the face of it "a handyman project"... has now become a "face saving" exercise! Melbourne Deck Builders, Timber Decking Now removed the initial works and then proceeded to install a treated pine subfloor, handrails and an access set of steps. 88mm TREATED PINE decking was chosen as a budget, yet durable finish. The deck works in themselves were straight forward and completed the owners original desire to have access to the very large rear yard from the lower deck via a previously unusable glass sliding door from a rear living room. This decrepit structure in Melbourne's leafy East had seen better days. The owner had started demolishing the "worst" sections for safety reasons.
The brief was as follows...
Access to the site was very restricted by a narrow passageway through the middle of a storage shed. To make matters worse, all cutting and materials storage had to be under an open carport out the front, as was the site bin, due to a bus stop immediately out the front on the street. Timber Decking Now (Melbourne Deck Builders) easily completed this "chess game" project in less than eight working days. Take a look at the dramatic 'after' pictures below. These photos are part of a complex pool deck reconstruction around an "in ground" pool in Suburban Melbourne (Eastern Suburbs) during 2012.
The concrete pool was installed on a sloping site that protruded out of the ground on its East elevation. The owners wanted unobtrusive access to the back of their property, where they intended to have professional landscapers complete a delightful lawned area with rock retaining walls for entertaining. The deck has being "tiered" full length with a wide central step, giving easy access to the lawned area. In a tightly held pocket in Melbourne's outer East, there was once an in ground pool surrounded by a very dated slate and aged MERBAU deck. To complete this sad scene, an ugly 2.4M tall timber framed wall painted blue surrounded the pool area on two sides. The wall separated the pool area from what could only be described as a "vegetative waste dump" at the rear, which the new owners described as "Jurassic Park". Without doubt this project was the largest and most complicated pool deck MELBOURNE DECK BUILDERS (Timber Decking Now) had ever taken on. The existing 140mm Merbau has been fixed down with Stainless Steel "Philips head" 50mm screws, which promptly either stripped or sheared off at the head when removal was attempted, resulting in a long and arduous task under the Summer sun. Sections of the subfloor were rotted out and additional joists were added in the existing structure. Removal of the 2.4m walls revealed the full extent of the challenge ahead! Although access was good on foot, there was nowhere to place the extraordinary amount of building materials required to complete this very serious project. TWO HUNDRED & FORTY square metres (1680L/M) of H/duty135mm wide COMPOSITE DECKING was laid over hundreds of additional lineal metres of H3 subfloor, terrace benches and steps. The Timber Decking Now team had to carry ALL the materials some 50 metres down to the work site from the front yard "storage area". Three 12 cubic metre bins accounted for the waste and demolition materials in "Jurassic Park" along with hundreds of metres of old weathered Merbau pulled up from the various levels around the pool. The project took a four man team a little over a month working six day weeks in mostly very hot and tiring conditions. The end result was a TOTAL TRANSFORMATION into an extremely pleasing civilised leisure zone with a sparkling pool, beautiful lawns and rock work, BBQ nook, broad terraces featuring deck lighting and steps, plus easy access to the new landscaped garden at the rear.
