These photos are part of a complex pool deck reconstruction around an "in ground" pool in Suburban Melbourne (Eastern Suburbs) during 2012.
The concrete pool was installed on a sloping site that protruded out of the ground on its East elevation. The owners wanted unobtrusive access to the back of their property, where they intended to have professional landscapers complete a delightful lawned area with rock retaining walls for entertaining. The deck has being "tiered" full length with a wide central step, giving easy access to the lawned area. This magnificent composite deck was constructed during 2012 in Melbourne's outer Eastern suburbs. The clients original pool area was a very unattractive and dated entertainment area which consisted of 2.4M high screens, painted blue in colour. The original decking was a combination of slate & 90mm Merbau decking. The subfloor under the Merbau was very rotted in places where there was a lack of ventilation and the structure being in contact with the ground beneath. The 90mm Merbau was "screwed down with SS deck screws, which mostly either sheared off or stopped upon removal. Behind the screen to the rear was an area that had being used as a rubbish dump for all manner of garden waste including, tree limbs, stumps, grass cuttings, plastic plant pots, blackberries and building rubble. Timber Decking Now (Melbourne Deck Builders) had a brief to replace all the Merbau decking and rotted subfloor, extend the existing deck to the rear, tier the rear of the deck in wide terrace seating and steps, demolish the existing screens, and BBQ floor and facade, and finally lay over 200sq/M of new COMPOSITE decking with "picture framing & breaker boards".
This project was very complicated. It had to account for rises and falls in the existing slate pool deck, allow access to filter boxes, screen out the pool pumping and filtration equipment, realign and level the remaining subfloor, excavate clearances under the new subfloor areas and retain an existing Palm tree by building the deck extension around it, plus allowing for future growth and swaying. Timber Decking Now (Melbourne Deck Builders) completed the project over a five week period with no inconvenience to the owner in any way. The project was completed on time and under budget. In 2010 MELBOURNE DECK BUILDERS, Timber Decking Now, visited a delightful retired couple living in Forrest Hill, MELBOURNE.
The couple had a courtyard area between their garage and home which was a real eyesore and almost unusable during the Melbourne Winter. They had engaged a reputable company to construct a steel powder coated & gabled roof over the open span. The construction was the perfect solution in keeping the rain out, but truly emphasised the patchy, uneven and ugly surface beneath. This led the retired couple to contact Timber Decking Now (through a personal recommendation from the roof builder) to quote on a timber deck and thereby creating a true alfresco dining and entertainment area. Visiting this couple was an absolute delight. Bill and Doris were "old school" steeped in the traditional Australian values of hospitality, friendliness and a fair go for all! After spending two hours chatting about life in general over a cup of tea and biscuits, we eventually got down to the business of measuring and quoting the project. Upon completing the measure and noting the couples requests, we again sat down over coffee and home made cakes whilst we finalised the figures. We completed our figures, presented an "on the spot" quote and were explaining the details, when Bill suddenly looked to Doris and said "what time is it dear, I don't want to be late". Thinking we were holding them up, we began to pack our samples and paperwork up, when Bill stated, "Iv'e got to get to the bank, can you wait for me, I will only be twenty minutes?" "Why is that" we asked. "To get the deposit for the deck!" "Have we won your project Bill?" Bill looked at us and stated "Tea and biscuits for quoting...... coffee and cake for winners!" The photos below show "before & after" shots taken during construction! The deck is 140mm select grade Merbau with an all H3/H4 subfloor. This 2010 Project in Glen Iris, Melbourne, was added to a brand new home which had replaced an old BV residence on a good sized allotment. The new residence was of a contemporary rendered design which needed decking sympathetic to the overall character of the residence.
TIMBER DECKING NOW in consultation with the owners chose a low maintenance COMPOSITE decking material that complimented the external structure in addition to offering a glamorous finish and a very long manufactures warranty. A crew of four experience installers arrived on site on a cool Monday morning to prepare the groundwork for the installation of the stumps and subfloor. By mid week the subfloor was completed and ready for the COMPOSITE DECKING installation. A further labour intensive three days were required to carefully gap and fit the finished product. The end result speaks for itself. A perfect marriage of quality and craftsmanship coming together to create a lifestyle choice in a conducive and inviting atmosphere! |
