The Autumn and Winter months are fast approaching. You will need to prepare your deck for the colder months if you plan on making use of it beyond Summer. Here are some things to do to get your deck ready for both Winter and Autumn.
After-Summer Care Sometime in the Autumn season, as the temperatures drop and in places, snow starts to fall, we start to make use of our Decks less and less. The Summer and Autumn season can be tough on decks: Think of dirt buildup, barbecue stains, food spills & foot traffic that normally occurs. Therefore, if left unclean, your weathered decks must take on the tough winter weather. It's extremely crucial that you take a while before the onslaught of Winter winterizes and to clean your deck completely. Otherwise, sleet, ice, snow along with other precipitation could cause damage that is irreversible. These are several measures you can take for the preparation of your deck for the colder months. Begin with a comprehensive cleaning. You might decide to clean your deck using a garden hose, rinsing away stains and dirt along with any signs of moss, algae or mould growing on the deck surfaces. Alternatively, you can call on a professional from Decaid (part of the Timber Decking Now Group) to safely clean your deck and remove grime to bring back your deck’s natural appearance and use environment friendly cleansers that can kill any contaminants. Put any deck furniture or planters away in storage. Instead of allowing the accumulation of snow or moisture on these items, keep them in a garage, if possible. Keeping these products in a secure, dry area can assist in preventing the development of mould or rust. Walk on your Timber Deck to test for structural problems. For instance, you may come across wobbly handles or cracked or free wood boards or railings. Apart from being a safety issue, they can also leave your deck in a weakened condition for the period of Winter thereby increasing the chances for damage. Examine the landscape all around your Timber Deck. Are there any low-hanging branches that may fall on the deck in case there is a winter storm? Try and eliminate any possible hazards which could damage your deck during the winter period. Raise the Roof You have not begun to build it yet; then you need to consider raising a Pergola or Verandah Roof above your deck. A Verandah will help keep out the cold, keep out the rain and also help keep your deck cozy and warm. It also provides you with the chance to design your decks in more flexible, more creative ways, like adding a covered BBQ and better furniture. Now you have another reason why you need to get the best Timber Deck Builders in Melbourne. The time to get a wonderful Verandah design might be now. When it comes to types of Timber Deck finish, we all have different opinions about what we feel looks nice, and each home comes with its own unique requirements and style. Some people love a modern appearance while others are of the opinion that their deck would benefit from a more contemporary finish. This beautiful West Australian Jarrah deck in North Brighton, Melbourne is an absolute treat!
The owner fell in love (as did we) with this beautifully coloured and textured hardwood. TIMBER DECKING MELBOURNE (Melbourne Deck Builders) sourced this lovely timber specifically for our client who desired "something different" that would enhance their period dwelling and compliment the existing second hand red brick pavers installed in their courtyard. The addition of lined "flush" box openings allowed the owners to instal their square plant pots "in the deck" so as to enhance the "established look" of the courtyard. As a final touch, low voltage deck lights were added to further enhance the decks appeal. The overall result was a functional, durable and extremely attractive lifestyle option, that remains one of our personal favorites! The owner of this elevated deck and verandah had a real problem! A building surveyor had completed an inspection which resulted in the entire structure being deemed unsafe.
The home was a rental under lease to a reliable tenant, who used the deck to gain access to the front door via a set of timber steps. The structure was over 28 years old when Timber Decking Now (Melbourne Deck Builders) were asked to quote a fixed price for its replacement. To add a twist to the negotiations, the properties owner was living in London UK! Therefore, after initially dealing with the owners agent in Melbourne, we were put in direct touch with the owner in London. The lady owner trusted our judgement and soon placed an order with Timber Decking Now for the decks replacement. Timber Decking Now (Melbourne Deck Builders) organised plans, permits, demolition bins and demolition / construction crew. We were in direct contact with the tenant and organised ourselves around her requirements. Special consideration had to factored in due to the decks clearance height. At 3.2M, lateral bracing, in addition to the diagonal bracing was specified to account for possible splaying of the 125mm cypress pine posts. The specified decking was 90mm treated pine to be sealed with an appropriate decking finish. The original handrails were to be duplicated, however, this requirement under current regulations meant they would not comply in part. The inside face of certain sections were lined with a tight mesh to deter children climbing over the rails. From beginning to end the entire process took about three weeks. The end result was a stronger, better constructed and ascetically pleasing structure that if maintained properly would be good for another 30+ years. This decrepit structure in Melbourne's leafy East had seen better days. The owner had started demolishing the "worst" sections for safety reasons.
The brief was as follows...
Access to the site was very restricted by a narrow passageway through the middle of a storage shed. To make matters worse, all cutting and materials storage had to be under an open carport out the front, as was the site bin, due to a bus stop immediately out the front on the street. Timber Decking Now (Melbourne Deck Builders) easily completed this "chess game" project in less than eight working days. Take a look at the dramatic 'after' pictures below. |
