In a tightly held pocket in Melbourne's outer East, there was once an in ground pool surrounded by a very dated slate and aged MERBAU deck. To complete this sad scene, an ugly 2.4M tall timber framed wall painted blue surrounded the pool area on two sides. The wall separated the pool area from what could only be described as a "vegetative waste dump" at the rear, which the new owners described as "Jurassic Park". Without doubt this project was the largest and most complicated pool deck MELBOURNE DECK BUILDERS (Timber Decking Now) had ever taken on. The existing 140mm Merbau has been fixed down with Stainless Steel "Philips head" 50mm screws, which promptly either stripped or sheared off at the head when removal was attempted, resulting in a long and arduous task under the Summer sun. Sections of the subfloor were rotted out and additional joists were added in the existing structure. Removal of the 2.4m walls revealed the full extent of the challenge ahead! Although access was good on foot, there was nowhere to place the extraordinary amount of building materials required to complete this very serious project. TWO HUNDRED & FORTY square metres (1680L/M) of H/duty135mm wide COMPOSITE DECKING was laid over hundreds of additional lineal metres of H3 subfloor, terrace benches and steps. The Timber Decking Now team had to carry ALL the materials some 50 metres down to the work site from the front yard "storage area". Three 12 cubic metre bins accounted for the waste and demolition materials in "Jurassic Park" along with hundreds of metres of old weathered Merbau pulled up from the various levels around the pool. The project took a four man team a little over a month working six day weeks in mostly very hot and tiring conditions. The end result was a TOTAL TRANSFORMATION into an extremely pleasing civilised leisure zone with a sparkling pool, beautiful lawns and rock work, BBQ nook, broad terraces featuring deck lighting and steps, plus easy access to the new landscaped garden at the rear. Luxury Townhouses require special consideration when it comes adding a deck. This up market home (above) in Melbourne's Eastern suburb of Heathmont, enjoys wonderful vistas of the adjoining golf course. The home's owners were of Scottish origin and retired. They were looking forward to morning tea on their new deck, whilst observing the local birdlife on the golf course. Timber Decking Now received a request to quote and offer ideas for the construction of the proposed deck. It did not take us long to demonstrate our ability through photos, references and practical knowledge. After receiving an additional two quotes, the retired owners awarded the project to Melbourne Deck Builders, Timber Decking Now. In doing so they stated "it's not all about price, it's as much about feeling good with the people you are dealing with!" On a mild October morning back in 2005 Melbourne Deck Builders, Timber Decking Now, began the construction of this Merbau deck in Rowville.
The brief was straight forward and basic. The owners wanted a low profile deck to place their outdoor furniture and a large umbrella on, so as to enjoy a little alfresco dining and drinks with family and friends. Secondly they wanted to keep the vista "open" and not feel confined by traditional handrails. After removing a totally dis functional landing, the deck was mapped out on the lawn using a line marker spray can and tape measure. Then, a stump hole pattern was marked out and the holes dug into the clay based conditions. The subfloor did not have a great deal or clearance underneath, therefore, the entire subfloor was constructed with H3 & H4 RH Treated Pine. Secondly, the plinth rails were generously gapped to allow a good cross flow of air. The handrail posts form part of the subfloor structure by passing through into a mass concrete pad, which offers excellent strength and rigidity. Finally, SUS 316 Marine Grade wire was custom fabricated to size and installed as specified. This new home in the basin was surrounded by mud, causing the young couple plenty of problems trying to keep their new home clean and tidy. To make matters worse, they could not access their clothes line or use the rear roller door to the garage during the wet months. Melbourne Deck Builders, Timber Decking Now, built this large and imposing deck to suit the young couples outdoor lifestyle. The deck was constructed during the muddy Winter of 2003.
Timber Decking Now was 'rained off' on three occasions during the construction period, making this project a drawn out battle with the elements. However, the end result justified the effort, with the new owners extremely happy with the multilevel finish. |
