This beautiful West Australian Jarrah deck in North Brighton, Melbourne is an absolute treat!
The owner fell in love (as did we) with this beautifully coloured and textured hardwood. TIMBER DECKING MELBOURNE (Melbourne Deck Builders) sourced this lovely timber specifically for our client who desired "something different" that would enhance their period dwelling and compliment the existing second hand red brick pavers installed in their courtyard. The addition of lined "flush" box openings allowed the owners to instal their square plant pots "in the deck" so as to enhance the "established look" of the courtyard. As a final touch, low voltage deck lights were added to further enhance the decks appeal. The overall result was a functional, durable and extremely attractive lifestyle option, that remains one of our personal favorites! In 2010 MELBOURNE DECK BUILDERS, Timber Decking Now, visited a delightful retired couple living in Forrest Hill, MELBOURNE.
The couple had a courtyard area between their garage and home which was a real eyesore and almost unusable during the Melbourne Winter. They had engaged a reputable company to construct a steel powder coated & gabled roof over the open span. The construction was the perfect solution in keeping the rain out, but truly emphasised the patchy, uneven and ugly surface beneath. This led the retired couple to contact Timber Decking Now (through a personal recommendation from the roof builder) to quote on a timber deck and thereby creating a true alfresco dining and entertainment area. Visiting this couple was an absolute delight. Bill and Doris were "old school" steeped in the traditional Australian values of hospitality, friendliness and a fair go for all! After spending two hours chatting about life in general over a cup of tea and biscuits, we eventually got down to the business of measuring and quoting the project. Upon completing the measure and noting the couples requests, we again sat down over coffee and home made cakes whilst we finalised the figures. We completed our figures, presented an "on the spot" quote and were explaining the details, when Bill suddenly looked to Doris and said "what time is it dear, I don't want to be late". Thinking we were holding them up, we began to pack our samples and paperwork up, when Bill stated, "Iv'e got to get to the bank, can you wait for me, I will only be twenty minutes?" "Why is that" we asked. "To get the deposit for the deck!" "Have we won your project Bill?" Bill looked at us and stated "Tea and biscuits for quoting...... coffee and cake for winners!" The photos below show "before & after" shots taken during construction! The deck is 140mm select grade Merbau with an all H3/H4 subfloor. On a mild October morning back in 2005 Melbourne Deck Builders, Timber Decking Now, began the construction of this Merbau deck in Rowville.
The brief was straight forward and basic. The owners wanted a low profile deck to place their outdoor furniture and a large umbrella on, so as to enjoy a little alfresco dining and drinks with family and friends. Secondly they wanted to keep the vista "open" and not feel confined by traditional handrails. After removing a totally dis functional landing, the deck was mapped out on the lawn using a line marker spray can and tape measure. Then, a stump hole pattern was marked out and the holes dug into the clay based conditions. The subfloor did not have a great deal or clearance underneath, therefore, the entire subfloor was constructed with H3 & H4 RH Treated Pine. Secondly, the plinth rails were generously gapped to allow a good cross flow of air. The handrail posts form part of the subfloor structure by passing through into a mass concrete pad, which offers excellent strength and rigidity. Finally, SUS 316 Marine Grade wire was custom fabricated to size and installed as specified. This brand new home in Croydon, in Melbourne's outer East was built into the side of a hill. Large high retaining walls were constructed with terraces to maximise the available space.
The home owners wanted the entire rear and side entrance decked using 90mm Merbau as the preferred finish. Access to the site was very difficult. The high retaining walls and terraces required all the materials to be carried down from an adjoining vacant lot of land at the rear. Thankfully the weather was on our side. This allowed the the materials to be placed close to the top of the cut. However, the steep path down meant care had to be taken when carrying lengths of timber and bags of concrete. The home was on three levels, with three individual access points onto the proposed deck. In response to this, Melbourne Deck Builders, Timber Decking Now designed the large deck with three different levels to accommodate the access points. Full width terrace steps married each level to the next, creating an expansive open deck which maximised the available space. The project in itself was challenging, but the end result was worth the great effort from all concerned. The delighted owners gained exceptional value for money and were full of praise for the totally issue free performance of the timber Decking Now team. |
