In 2010 MELBOURNE DECK BUILDERS, Timber Decking Now, visited a delightful retired couple living in Forrest Hill, MELBOURNE.
The couple had a courtyard area between their garage and home which was a real eyesore and almost unusable during the Melbourne Winter. They had engaged a reputable company to construct a steel powder coated & gabled roof over the open span. The construction was the perfect solution in keeping the rain out, but truly emphasised the patchy, uneven and ugly surface beneath. This led the retired couple to contact Timber Decking Now (through a personal recommendation from the roof builder) to quote on a timber deck and thereby creating a true alfresco dining and entertainment area. Visiting this couple was an absolute delight. Bill and Doris were "old school" steeped in the traditional Australian values of hospitality, friendliness and a fair go for all! After spending two hours chatting about life in general over a cup of tea and biscuits, we eventually got down to the business of measuring and quoting the project. Upon completing the measure and noting the couples requests, we again sat down over coffee and home made cakes whilst we finalised the figures. We completed our figures, presented an "on the spot" quote and were explaining the details, when Bill suddenly looked to Doris and said "what time is it dear, I don't want to be late". Thinking we were holding them up, we began to pack our samples and paperwork up, when Bill stated, "Iv'e got to get to the bank, can you wait for me, I will only be twenty minutes?" "Why is that" we asked. "To get the deposit for the deck!" "Have we won your project Bill?" Bill looked at us and stated "Tea and biscuits for quoting...... coffee and cake for winners!" The photos below show "before & after" shots taken during construction! The deck is 140mm select grade Merbau with an all H3/H4 subfloor. This 2010 Project in Glen Iris, Melbourne, was added to a brand new home which had replaced an old BV residence on a good sized allotment. The new residence was of a contemporary rendered design which needed decking sympathetic to the overall character of the residence.
TIMBER DECKING NOW in consultation with the owners chose a low maintenance COMPOSITE decking material that complimented the external structure in addition to offering a glamorous finish and a very long manufactures warranty. A crew of four experience installers arrived on site on a cool Monday morning to prepare the groundwork for the installation of the stumps and subfloor. By mid week the subfloor was completed and ready for the COMPOSITE DECKING installation. A further labour intensive three days were required to carefully gap and fit the finished product. The end result speaks for itself. A perfect marriage of quality and craftsmanship coming together to create a lifestyle choice in a conducive and inviting atmosphere! Timbertop is a small, prestigious estate on Rowville's Southern boundary. The homes are larger than average and the allotments are equally large.
Melbourne Deck Builders, TIMBER DECKING NOW, quoted to build an irregular shaped deck in a courtyard area on one such home in this estate. The client wanted a finish she could colour or stain to her taste. Therefore we suggested using 88mm treated pine decking, which is a "blank sheet!" finishing material, allowing the client to seal the raw surface in any solid colour or stain they wish. In this particular case, the owner chose a cypress coloured sealing stain, professionally applied by a qualified painter. The painter also painted the balustraded handrails in colours to match the existing colour scheme of the home. Although the work site was very tight, due to the shrubs and plants about the perimeter, the end result proved to be very functional when compared to the uneven and patchy grass conditions that existed before the project began. Treated Pine decking is an "entry level" finish that if installed correctly to allow for shrinkage (if the product is "new stock") can be both stained and sealed to imitate any popular decking material. There are a number of finishing products on the market that both "stain and seal" timber decking. A good paint retailer will have a wealth of information available to those wishing to make an informed decision. Online research is also an excellent avenue to gain an understanding of just what can be done. We revisited this site through an invitation by the owner to snap a couple of "before and after" photos of the "sealing/stain" and paint job. The owner was obviously very pleased with the "lift" the painting and staining job achieved. The photos show the dramatic difference a little informed planning can achieve. Another satisfied client! Luxury Townhouses require special consideration when it comes adding a deck. This up market home (above) in Melbourne's Eastern suburb of Heathmont, enjoys wonderful vistas of the adjoining golf course. The home's owners were of Scottish origin and retired. They were looking forward to morning tea on their new deck, whilst observing the local birdlife on the golf course. Timber Decking Now received a request to quote and offer ideas for the construction of the proposed deck. It did not take us long to demonstrate our ability through photos, references and practical knowledge. After receiving an additional two quotes, the retired owners awarded the project to Melbourne Deck Builders, Timber Decking Now. In doing so they stated "it's not all about price, it's as much about feeling good with the people you are dealing with!" |
