In the Winter of 2007 Timber Decking Now received a call from an Italian couple who were in the process of completing their new home in Rowville. This was their first build and they were eager to move in and enjoy the luxury and space their new home afforded them. There was one big problem however! Prior to moving in, the owners decided to install an in ground pool to avoid the inevitable mud and mess made with any excavation in Winter. However, things got delayed... the rain and mud slowed the project down to such an extent that time was running out! Moving in day was only weeks away and that rain filled concrete hole in the back yard presented a real danger to their young children. Timber Decking Now we're called with an urgent brief to build a MERBAU deck immediately behind the new home and add a complying 1200mm semi frameless glass pool fence as a matter of urgency! TDN attended the very next day, measured and quoted the supply and install on the spot, and gave a very early start and completion date. NO OTHER CONTRACTOR offered the client this level of service. TDN was awarded the project within 24 hours of quoting on the basis of the above. Our team swung straight into action, ordering all the building materials and glass fencing. We then scheduled every facet of the install to a set date. The photos clearly show the deck install completed, along with the glass completed! The pool remains uncompleted and the deadline met well prior the owners moving in to their new home. The photos of this seemingly simple deck show the construction nearing completion. Melbourne Deck Builders, TIMBER DECKING NOW still to complete the handrails with SS WIRE inserts, some trim on the verandah INFILLS and row of plinth railing on the bottom edge of the setting area.
The SECRET to this deck was hidden from the eye. It what is underneath that made this project so unusual. Below this deck was formerly a 2.8M high concrete retaining wall, which separated the house some 4 metres away like an open concrete bunker. There was a room at the lower level with a sliding door exiting into this concrete pit, with one end open to the side path of the property. The owners wanted to build the deck over the open pit and then add a Timber Verandah over the deck. The only way to attack this project was to build the deck first and thereby create a safe working platform to construct the Verandah! This turned out to be the easy part. It was relatively simple to dynabolt a 290 x 45mm H3 F7 treated pine ledger to the three walls and then instal a series of 240 x 45mm joists, supported by a double 240 x 45mm central bearer with a centre and end post fixed onto the thick concrete base with 100 x 100 bolt-on's. The verandah ledger had to be fixed above the existing windows which were taller than standard. The owner was concerned about the height allowing allowing wind blown rain to penetrate well into the deck area, so TIMBER DECKING NOW fixed the potential problem with a large infill to reduce the clearance and thereby offer protection from the wind, rain and hot Summer sun. Although the photos do not show the completed project. The addition of the timber trimming to the verandah infill, the completed handrails with SS wire inserts and finally the paint job, produced a dramatic result. Lastly, the owners created a "fern garden" and very private retreat for the recreation room which formerly offered nothing more than a concrete box wasteland under the new deck. Melbourne Deck Builders, Timber Decking Now, received a call from a lovely retired couple in KNOXFIELD. They were looking to build a good sized deck with a flat roof to gain protection from the elements. In addition, they wanted to instal a new sliding door in place of a window, plus a new matching replacement sliding door for an old raw Aluminium one. Natural light was a high priority, therefore the client chose 'Laserlite 3000' for the roofing. Not only would they be protected from the rain and UV, but also 'Laserlite 3000's' ability to reflect the Sun's infra red rays to reduce the heat under the roof. The chosen decking was 140mm Merbau, with an all H3/H4 subfloor. The series of photos (below) shows the construction taking place over a two week period. From start to finish our clients were typically gracious and looked after the team with tea, biscuits and cool drinks on a daily basis. In return, the team went the extra mile in making sure every detail was attended to the clients complete satisfaction.

This relatively new unit in Burwood was a great home, but lacked entertaining space. A small existing open deck was fine for a cuppa in the morning sun, but offered no protection from the elements, nor was it large enough for a little Alfresco dining. The new owners wanted firstly to enlarge the deck and have it extended thereby allowing it to wrap around the corner of house. A new set of steps was specified to gain access from an existing paved courtyard. In addition a new right angled gabled roof was requested to protect the entire structure. Balustraded handrails completed the clients request. After demolishing the existing undersized structure, Melbourne Deck Builders, Timber Decking Now proceeded with the new construction and completed the works in seven working days, with the owner following us up with a paint brush on a daily basis. |
